Some goodbyes deserve beauty.
Suzhou Threads exists for the moment a photograph is not enough — and nothing else will do but the real thing, made slowly, by hand, in silk.
It began with a photograph we could not stop looking at — and the quiet realization that a print of it, however fine, was still just… paper.
The photograph was of a dog named after a city, taken three weeks before she left. Anyone who has lived that three-weeks-before knows the arithmetic: suddenly every image feels both infinite and impossibly thin.
Somewhere in the searching that followed, we found Su embroidery — portraits built not from ink but from thousands of strands of silk, layered by a master's hand until light itself seems to live in them. Nothing printed behaved like that. Nothing machine-made ever could.
The rest is simply this: we brought the commission to Suzhou, stood in the atelier while the portrait took shape over weeks, and understood that we had found what these goodbyes deserve. Suzhou Threads is our way of putting that same pair of master hands — and this same 2,500-year patience — within reach of every family carrying a photograph like ours.
Three beliefs we stitch by.
Craft over speed
A portrait takes 110–250 hours because likeness lives in texture, and texture lives in time. We will never compress this to meet a queue. If the atelier is full, the atelier is full.
One master, one portrait
No factory benches, no hand-offs. The master who places the first stitch places the last, and their name arrives with your certificate. Accountability you can hold.
Honesty in every stitch
Previews before payment of labor, progress photographs on request, real numbers for real capacity. Luxury without honesty is just expensive — we're not interested.
Four promises, kept in writing.
You approve before we stitch
Within seven days of your order you receive a complimentary digital preview of the stitch plan. Nothing begins until you say yes — and adjustments at that stage are unlimited and free.
The process is visible
Progress photographs at every milestone, on request always. You'll watch the eyes appear, the fur gather depth, the light learn your companion's coat. No black box, ever.
Delivery without surprises
Insured, duties prepaid (DDP), tracked to your door. The price you approve is the price you pay — full stop, including framing and museum glass.
Your photographs are yours
Images you share are stored solely to create your commission, shared only with your named master, and never used publicly without your written permission. Gallery pieces appear because families offered them.
Four things we will never do.
Never print
No inkjet "silk-effect" canvases. If it didn't pass through a needle, we won't sell it.
Never machine
No machine-assisted embroidery passed off as handwork. Every stitch, by hand.
Never rush
No expedite fees, no queue-jumping. The hours a portrait needs are the hours it gets.
Never discount
No flash sales on memorials. Our prices are honest once, not inflated twice.
